Lily felt awkward in the police station. Luther was late. When he arrived, he looked harried, and he was carrying a briefcase with papers sticking out awkwardly.

“Sorry, I came from court.”

“Let’s just get this over with. I have to be back at school in forty minutes.”

They walked up to the counter. He announced, “We need to report a crime.”

The officer took them back to a detective and told them to sit. Lily kept checking her watch.

The detective showed and took a seat. “Name.”

“Lily Ruby.”

He hesitated but wrote it down.

“Crime?”

“Charlie Fisher has been stealing my identity.”

He cocked his brow.

“I don’t mean like that. I mean, financially. He’s been using my name and social security number to set up accounts and take all my money. I hired Luther Snyder to stop him, and while we’ve kept him from opening new accounts, recently anyway, he is still trying to ruin my credit. I want him arrested.”

“How long has this been happening?”

She drew in a deep breath and prayed this part wasn’t a problem. “Two years.”

“Two years?” He blinked.

“I know. I should have made a bigger deal earlier. I did come in and report it the first couple of times, but no one seemed willing to help me. The officer said at most Charlie would get three years and then he’d be back out on the street, and he’d be mad. I have a foster child, and I just didn’t want to do the whole court thing. So, I listened to the officer and withdrew my report.”

“We’ll address the officer who told you that later, but for right now you’re saying you want to do something?”

“Yes, because it hasn’t stopped, and I can’t keep worrying about him opening new accounts in my name.”

“I see.” He wrote down notes.

Luther handed over a large stack of papers. “Proof of what my client says.”

Detective Regan took the papers. “I’ll look these over and get back to you.” He glanced at the name and his brow furrowed. “Wait, did you say Charlie Fisher, you mean Charles Fisher?”

“Yes.”

“Hmm, he has been on our radar for some time. You’re not the only one he has done this to over the years. He’s also a known gambler. I don’t think he’ll be too hard to find. And I think that other officer was incorrect. He’s going away for a lot longer than three years.”

“Let’s hope so.”
